Open for more than 10 years now, JAVA JIVE is especially popular on weekends, when there’s always a wait. The Midtown diner has a retro ’50s feel with Formica tables and vinyl seating. The staff, like the coffee, is bracing but excellent. Gingerbread waffles with lemon curd have long been the favorite here, although pancakes are good, too. And the biscuits have no peer. Are you getting the drift? Aim for the heavy carbs. The egg dishes are decent, but the kitchen is at its best carbing you up. less...

One of the last true diners in the city, the Skillet serves big buttermilk biscuits available straight up or stuffed. Our favorite order remains the mild country ham with two eggs (over easy), biscuits, grits and red-eye gravy. You can get the same heart-stopper with pork chops or corned beef hash instead of ham. Return a few hours later for an equally hearty lunch and be sure you get a slice of lemon ice box pie. less...

Radial Cafe
Going out to breakfast should be relaxing, not cutthroat. RADIAL CAFE is one of the few places left in Atlanta where jockeying for a table isn’t a professional sport. The space is cozy but not too cramped, and funky art on the walls could perk up even the most bleary-eyed night owl. Don’tmore...

Bobby & June's Kountry Kitchen
We be talking down-home Southern tradition here. Country ham steak is the real salt- and fat-edged, tangy, grilled-to-order thing. Steak knives are thoughtfully provided. Sausage patties and bacon strips are almost as good. Grill-scrambled eggs pack enough flavor to match the pork of choice, while homemademore...

Sausage patties and bacon strips are almost as good. Grill-scrambled eggs pack enough flavor to match the pork of choice, while homemade biscuits and long-simmered grits are three times better than Mom ever made. The crowd's a Midtown mix of truckers, television types and students. The checks are small. Service is motherly and fast. Yee-ha. less...
